Onze laatste stop in Nieuw-Zeeland was Christchurch. Nadat we onze auto vaarwel hadden gezegd, was het tijd om de stad te ontdekken. We hadden een Lonely Planet uit 2010 en begonnen vol goede moed aan de stadswandeling uit het boek. De eerste stop was een gezellige straat met terrasjes, maar in werkelijkheid zagen we niet meer dan een parkeerplaats. Ook de volgende mooie straat was veranderd in een bouwwerf, dus dan maar naar de kathedraal. Die stond nog voor de helft: de toren is ingestort in de aardbeving van 2011.

Het is voor ons heel moeilijk om voor te stellen hoe een stad er na een aardbeving uit ziet. In de aardbeving van 2011 zijn 182 mensen omgekomen, meer dan 5000 auto’s moesten uit de stad gesleept worden en 1200 gebouwen hebben een schade van 100.000 dollar of meer. Maar in alle ellende is het ook wel leuk om een stad opnieuw te kunnen indelen en opbouwen. We zagen dat er veel goede ideeen zijn en mooie nieuwe gebouwen gebouwd worden.

Na de mislukte stadswandeling begaven we ons naar de re:START mall, een winkelcentrum in opgestapelde containers, dat uit nood gebouwd is na de aardbeving. Een superleuke plek met lekker eten en design winkeltjes. De leegstaande panden in de stad geven ook genoeg plek voor graffiti kunst en er zaten een aantal mooie kunstwerken tussen!

’s Avonds was het tijd voor een bezoekje aan een rugbywedstrijd. Uiteraard in het tijdelijke stadion, want het gewone stadion (dat net af was in 2011), staat al 6 jaar ongebruikt leeg omdat het beschadigd is. Het is altijd leuk om een lokale sportwedstrijd te bezoeken en we hadden geluk dat de Christchurch Crusaders het op zouden nemen tegen de Auckland Blues. Vooraf zou er een uur entertainment zijn en dat was niet gelogen. 18 zeer schaars geklede meisjes voerden een dansshow op en 6 ridders op paarden werden enthousiast toegejuicht tijdens hun rondjes door het stadion, alles ondersteund door de live band. Daarna was het tijd voor de wedstrijd, waarvan we de regels niet echt kenden, maar dat was ook niet nodig. De scrums waren leuk om te zien, maar moesten vaak over. Er werd gescoord, vooral door de Crusaders en een paar mooie acties zorgden ervoor dat de 2 keer 40 minuten omvlogen met uiteindelijke winst voor de thuisploeg.

We brachten ook een bezoekje aan de botanische tuinen en het museum van Christchurch. De botanische tuin was prachtig met een rozentuin met een paar honderd soorten rozen. Het museum had van alles een beetje; Maori geschiedenis, kleding, een nagebouwd straatje, opgezette dieren en een enorme Antarctica afdeling. Zelfs Bert vond het interessant, en hij heeft het normaal in een museum wel gezien na een minuut of 20.

Een hoogtepunt in Christchurch was de ‘reunie’ met Reinout en Leslyn. We hadden afgesproken om wat te gaan eten, maar er was tussen alle reisverhalen door maar weinig tijd om de (volgens Bert) beste burger ooit op te eten. We besloten daarom de volgende dag te picknicken in de botanische tuin en nog een bezoekje te brengen aan het museum, dat we de dag ervoor niet helemaal hadden kunnen zien. Na een fantastische fotoshoot (het resultaat daarvan komt zeer waarschijnlijk binnenkort op de blog van Reinout & Leslyn) namen we afscheid. Of we de volgende keer in Belgie of toch ergens anders proosten is nog de vraag!

Na een weekje Christchurch was het tijd om verder te gaan. We laten Nieuw-Zeeland achter ons en vliegen naar Sydney. Voor Australie hebben we een visum van 3 maanden, dus we zullen zien wat de komende tijd ons gaat brengen in een nieuw land down under!

Our last stop in New Zealand was Christchurch. After we waved our car goodbye it was time to discover the city. We had a Lonely Planet from 2010 and started on the city walk. The first stop was a cosy street with bars and cafes, but in reality there was nothing more than a parking lot. Also the next street was transformed in a building area, so we continued on to the cathedral. Only half of it was there: the tower collapsed during the earth quake of 2011.

It is really difficult for us to imagine what a city looks like after an earthquake. In the earthquake of 2011, 182 people died, more than 5000 cars were towed out of the city and 1200 buildings have a damage of minimum 100.000 dollar. But besides all the negativity, it is quite nice to be able to build a city from scratch. We saw that there are lots of good ideas and beautiful modern buildings are being built.

After the failed city walk we went to the re:START mall, a shopping centre located in containers. A really cool place with great food and design shops. The empty buildings in the city also give lots of space for graffiti and we found some really nice pieces of art.

In the evening it was time for a visit to a rugby match. In the temporary stadium of course, because the normal stadium (that they just finished building in 2011) hasn’t been used for the last 6 years as it is not safe. It is always fun to visit a local sports match and we were lucky that the Christchurch Crusaders played against the Auckland Blues. They promised us an hour entertainment before the match and it was great! 18 girls with almost no clothes on performed a dance and 6 knight on horses rode a few rounds through the stadium, all supported by music from the live band. After the entertainment, it was time for the match. We didn’t know the rules very well, but that wasn’t needed either. The scrums were fun to watch. There were some scores, mostly by the Crusaders, and a few amazing runs made the 2 times 40 minutes fly by. The Crusaders won!

We also visited the botanical gardens and the museum of Christchurch. The botanical garden was beautiful with a rose garden with a few hundred kinds of roses. The museum had a bit of everything; Maori history, clothing, a reconstructed street, stuffed animals and a huge Antarctica department. Even Bert found it interesting and normally he’ll only stay in a museum for about 20 minutes.

A highlight in Christchurch was the ‘reunion’ with Reinout and Leslyn. We agreed to get something to eat, but in between all the travel stories, there was not a lot of time to eat the (according to Bert) best burger ever. We decided to meet again the next day for a picnic in the botanical gardens and pay another visit to the museum, as we hadn’t seen everything the day before yet. After a great photoshoot (the result can be seen on the blog of Reinout and Leslyn shortly) we said goodbye. If our next meeting will be in Belgium or maybe somewhere else is something only time can tell.

After a week in Christchurch it was time to go on. We leave New Zealand behind and fly to Sydney. We have a 3 month visa for Australia, so we will see which adventures are waiting for us in the coming weeks in the other land down under!
