Lesotho

—Scroll down for English—

Daarna vervolgden we onze weg over vers geasfalteerde wegen.

Most tourists enter Lesotho through the Sani pass for a day trip. Besides the Sani pass, you will then visit an ‘authentic’ Basotho (that’s how the inhabitants of Lesotho are called) village and the highest pub of Africa. We wanted to drive through Lesotho ourselves to see how the country is outside of the typical touristic places. Anyhow, we started with a drink in the highest pub in Africa, while we were there anyway. The gluhwein was great and complemented the temperatures that were Africa-unworthy. After the pub we hit the road again and we decided to stop early in St. James, a small village in the mountains. Even though this lodge was mentioned in the Lonely Planet, the people didn’t seem to be ready for tourists at all. They still had to organize couches, a carpet, firewood and water. One might think that the last 2 are the easiest to organize, but you’re wrong. In a country that is completely above the tree level, wood is holy. Luckily the stone coal we got straight out of the mine worked well. Water was impossible, the pipes were frozen.
After we installed ourselves in our rondavels, it was time to walk around the village. The few men we met on the street were mostly laughing about and at those 3 Dutch girls, but it were the children that started talking to us. The just wanted to chat a bit or even better; pose for our camera. Later we found the other men of the village: in the pub of course! What else do you do on a Sunday afternoon? We looked at their game of pool and they looked at us.

After a short and cold night we were enjoying the amazing view when we saw the school was starting. From all sides, children came running down the mountain as fast as they could and we soon found out why: they were too late! Being late is not something that goes unnoticed in Lesotho, the teacher was waiting for all the latecomers to hit them on their hands with a stick. A harsh confrontation with reality in this otherwise so beautiful country…

We continued our way to the skiing area (yes, really!) and towards the northern part of the country. The route was breathtakingly fantastic and the pictures can’t possibly reflect that. Unfortunately I have no words to describe the landscapes so you will have to do with the pictures anyway. After a few hours we stopped at a ‘cultural sight’ which turned out to be really fun. Real rock art by bushmen and a small museum that showed how the Basotho people live. After this short stop it was time to cross the border into South Africa again and join the Western world (Supermarket! Electricity! Water!). We enjoyed a free cider and beer tasting and the next day we continued over an amazing road again, back to the beginning of the Sani pass.
