Charity in Namibia & South Africa

Via via kwamen we terecht bij Little Pony preschool.

Because of your amazing donations we had (and have!) money to help the locals in developing countries. We liked Luderitz, so we decided to visit a preschool here. Through our hostel we got the contact information of Little Pony preschool.

Little Pony preschool was opened only 6 months ago by Sharifa in a poor part of town. This amazing woman, a single mom of 2 boys, takes care of children of whom the parents have to work, but can’t afford other childcare. For 10 hours a day, 5 days a week of childcare the parents have to pay 8 euro a month. Not a lot of income for Sharifa, who also has to pay the rent from this money, but it’s a good solution for both Sharifa and the parents.

We were very welcome in the small preschool where there are 13 children at the moment. The building contains 3 small rooms, 1 office, 1 bedroom for the children that still nap and 1 playroom. There was not a lot to play with as there were only 3 stuffed animals and 1 skipping rope, but the children still looked very happy.

The children really wanted to show us what they had learned in the past 6 months. Praying, the days of the week and the colors were demonstrated proudly. The best thing was when we lifted them up until they could reach the ceiling, so much fun! Luckily we had our car filled with things we could donate. The children started fighting about the first ball, so we decided to donate 2 balls. We also had some puzzles, but it turned out to be difficult for children who had never seen a puzzle before. They managed with some help and were really proud when they put a piece in the right spot. We also donated arts & crafts materials, games and books and we know they will be put to good use!

As always my camera was great fun here as well. I will send a group picture for every child to Sharifa. These children have no pictures of themselves, so I am sure they will be happy to receive one! And hopefullt we manage to stay in touch with Sharifa and her preschool. Unfortunately we have to use old-school mail, because they don’t have e-mail in the townships. To be continued (hopefully)!

The things we had with us were bought in South Africa. In total we spend 350 euro on footballs, skipping ropes, puzzles, educational games, books, arts & crafts materials and stationary. After we donated in Zambia and Namibia, we had some things left. We donated these things to the Capricorn primary school in Cape Town. This school has 680 students and almost all of them have parents that deal with drug or alcohol abuse. Most of the children live with other family members. We got a tour of the school and saw what an amazing project this is! Unfortunately we don’t have pictures, but the things we donated were very welcome here as well!
